Dear Parent/Guardians

Welcome to Sedgemoor Manor Nursery and Infants’ School. We are delighted that you are considering a place at our school for your child.

The information in this prospectus gives only a brief snapshot of our school – the best way to find out more is to come and look! Do please make an appointment to come and meet me, the Headteacher. I will be pleased to show you around the school and answer any questions you may have. Once children have joined the school, parents are welcome into the classrooms at the start of the day (8.40 – 8.50 am) and after the end of the day at 3.00 pm to look at work and chat with staff on an informal basis.

We have termly open evenings, but teachers will always be happy to arrange a time to meet with you at other times.

We hope that your child will want to share with you special work that they have done during the day and that they will invite you into the classroom to see this.

Your help with school activities is always appreciated, and the Friends of the School are always looking for new committee members. Vacancies also occur for parent representatives on our Governing Body.

All of the staff at Sedgemoor Manor Nursery and Infants’ School look forward to working with you and hope that you and your child enjoy sharing the life of our school.

Best wishes

Louise Duffin

Headteacher

3. ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

Sedgemoor Manor Nursery & Infant School is a friendly and inclusive school. We offer an exciting and creative education to children from age 3 to 7 years old.

Our established team of teachers and teaching assistants place a high value on developing children’s self esteem. We believe our pupils need to feel secure and confident before they can begin to explore the world around them and achieve their potential.

Foundation Stage

We have one nursery class called Little Owls and three reception classes, Snowy Owls, Eagle Owls and Tawny Owls.

Our Nursery offers flexible provision and up to 15 funded hours. Extra sessions can be paid for and children can stay for lunch. If you have pre-school aged children please ask at the school office for a nursery prospectus.

Children can join us in the nursery class in the term following their third birthday, children then move into a Reception class in the September of the school year that they are 5 years old. Some children join us from other Nurseries and playgroups at this stage.

Home visits

We understand that parents know their children the best of all. So we work hard to seek your views and ideas about your child. All children have a home visit from the class teacher or nursery teacher when they first join the school in Foundation Stage.

Key Stage One

When children have completed a year in a Reception class at Foundation Stage they will move on to Key Stage One. At this stage we currently have five classes - two Year 1 classes, a mixed Year 1 and 2 class and two Year 2 classes. This varies from year to year depending on pupil numbers in each year group.

Children spend 2 years in Key Stage One and then transfer to our Partner Junior School- Sedgemoor Manor Community Junior School at the end of Year 2. We work closely with our partner school and the children have lots of opportunities to prepare for this change.

Support for children who need a little bit more

We run a small group in our Rainbow Room, to support pupils who find it difficult to access their learning in a whole class setting when they begin school. We employ a Learning Mentor full time in school to support pupils who may sometimes find aspects of school life a little challenging. The learning mentor is able to give individual support, to work with groups to develop social skills and to offer a friendly face at playtimes.

Extra Curricular Clubs

We have a number of after school clubs available to our older pupils- Years 1 and 2. These include dance club, recorder club, multi-skills sport club and football club which run all year, other clubs may vary each term. Details of these clubs are sent out termly.

Extended Schools

We run a breakfast club and after school club called Hoot Club. We also offer holiday play schemes. Children can attend once they are five years old.

Activities on offer:

*Forest school *Cooking *Messy play *Painting *Cutting & Sticking *Junk modelling *Outdoor & indoor games *Role play *Arts and craft

A teatime snack and drink will be provided

Please ask at the school office for more details.

Adult Learning

As a Community School we firmly believe that learning does not stop with the children…

Over the past few years we have been able to run classes for parents in Literacy, Numeracy and English as an additional language according to demand.

Parent Champions

We have a group of parents who help us continually improve home school communications. They write our fortnightly newsletter for parents and work hard to keep you informed of what is going on in school.

The Sedgemoor Family Centre offers Parent and Toddler activities and there is also a programme of activities during school holidays.

Admissions

Admissions to Reception classes are now handled centrally by the LA (Local Authority) and forms are available during the autumn term. These will be sent to you by the LA.

If your child is transferring from another school you should make an appointment to meet with our Headteacher who will show you around the school and discuss with you your child’s needs. You will still need to apply directly via the LA.

Freedom of Information Act 2000

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 the Governing body have drawn up a publication scheme which lists all the information Sedgemoor Manor Infants makes public. The classes of information we undertake to make available are organised into 4 main areas:

  • School Prospectus

  • Governors’ documents

  • Polices that relate to pupils and the school curriculum

  • Policies which relate to the school in general

You may ask to see any of these documents. If you require a paper version please ask at the school office. Single copies of information are provided free. However if your request means a lot of photocopying or is for printed publications there may be a charge. We will let you know the cost before fulfilling your request.

THE SCHOOL DAY

The school day runs from 8:40-3:00. Outside of these hours you are responsible for your child’s safety on the school site, unless your child is attending the extended school provision.

Times

Children should arrive between 8.40 am and 8.50 am.

They go straight to the classroom at this time. A bell sounds at 8.40 am and again at 8.50 am.

Children arriving after the 8.50 am bell will be unable to enter via the classroom and will need to go to the school office; they will then receive a late mark.

Registration 8.50 am

Playtime 10.30 – 10.45 am

Lunchtime 12.00 noon – 1.10 pm

Home time 3.00 pm.

Please collect your child promptly at 3.00 pm. Children become distressed when their parents are late. No child is allowed to leave school unaccompanied or with anyone other than their parent or ‘parent-designated adult’, unless the school has been notified beforehand.

Wake & Shake

Our school day begins with a Wake & Shake session when all children and staff exercise to music. This is followed by a piece of wholemeal toast. We have found that this combination helps prepare our pupils for a busy day of learning and fun activities.

Milk

Milk is free for all children up until their fifth birthday. This is offered either mid morning or afternoon, depending on the activities for the day. After children are five, milk can be paid for. This should be arranged by parents direct through ‘Cool Milk at School’ who handle all the administration and distribution of the milk to school. They can be contacted on Freephone 0800 3213248 or on-line at www.coolmilk.com.

Fruit

We are also very lucky to be able to give all children free fresh fruit or vegetables every day. We find this is a good social occasion and that most children enjoy trying food that they may not have tried before.

Lunches

Lunches are supplied from the kitchen at our partner Junior School. They are cooked at the junior school and transported the short journey along the drive. Children have a choice from two hot meals along with a choice of dessert, yogurt or fruit each day.

Meals cost £2.20 per day (from November 2010). Money should be sent to the school office in a sealed named envelope. Children who do not have school dinners bring a packed lunch and everyone eats together in the Hall. We do not allow children to bring chocolate or sweets to school in lunch boxes and we encourage parents to send a healthy lunch box if you do not choose to have a school lunch.

If you think you may qualify for free school meals please ask at the School Office for an application form. Please claim even if your child does not eat a meal as this may entitle your child to other free activities and services.

Keeping healthy

We have Healthy School Plus status. As part of this we encourage the children to drink plenty of water during the school day. We have water fountains, but to avoid long queues we ask pupils to bring a bottle of drinking water each day. This should than go home at the end of the day and be washed and refilled. No other drinks are allowed; water is good for the brain and promotes learning.

ATTENDANCE

It is very important that your child attends school every day and arrives on time. The school is visited regularly by an attendance officer who reviews a
